In 2007, after ten years of ministering to thousands of inner city children with the The Power Company Kids Club in Pontiac, MI, Dan and Rachel Smither heard the call of God to begin a unique ministry to children in the worst AIDS affected area in the entire world: Durban, South Africa. Relocating to a developing African nation with a reputation as the crime capital of the world with four young daughters was not an easy transition to make. The work literally began with one child in one squatter camp, and has continued to grow steadily from there. Key of Hope now operates with a staff of twelve, ministering in nine different slums and visiting more than 1,000 children in their homes each week.
