How a Community United to Make a Difference
Every now and then, we are reminded of the incredible things that happen when God inspires a community to come together with a shared purpose. From May 30 to June 1, Shepherd’s Gate Church held its annual Step Out and Serve Weekend, and the results were nothing short of inspiring. Over 450 volunteers stepped out of their routines and into the mission of serving others, spreading kindness and hope throughout the Metro Detroit area!
Making an Impact: The Weekend in Numbers
The sheer scale of what was accomplished is a testament to the power of collective effort and love in action. Here’s a look at the incredible statistics from the weekend:
- 43 sites: Volunteers served at 43 locations across the community, such as homes, schools, neighborhoods and partner ministries.
- 450+ participants: More than 450 people came together, donating their time and energy to serve those in need.
- 400 PB&J sandwiches: Volunteers prepared and delivered 400 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to feed the homeless.
- 54 yards of mulch: Landscaping teams spread 54 yards of mulch to beautify homes and areas in need of care.
- 68 bikes refurbished: A team of dedicated volunteers refurbished 68 bicycles, which were then donated to children and adults.
- 300 essentials kits: Volunteers assembled 300 kits containing basic supplies for individuals and families facing hardship.
- 300 care notes: Handwritten care notes were created to spread words of encouragement and hope to those in the community.
More Than a Weekend
Step Out and Serve Weekend is not just an event; it’s a movement that continues all year round. Our vision at SG to value every[one] we meet, influence every[where] we go, and live generously with every[thing] we have is put into practice individually and as a community every day, demonstrating the love of Christ in tangible ways.
And we know that the legacy of Step Out and Serve Weekend will continue long after the mulch has been spread and the sandwiches delivered. It plants seeds of generosity and compassion that will grow in the lives of volunteers and recipients alike.
Looking Forward
As we celebrate the success of this year’s Step Out and Serve Weekend, we look ahead with hope and anticipation. What more can we accomplish together? How can we continue to uplift our neighbors and transform our communities as we make an impact with the love of Jesus? Will you personally carry this mindset of serving others to show the love of Jesus with you wherever you go?
To everyone who participated, supported, or cheered on the efforts this weekend—thank you! Your service has made a lasting impact, and your light shines brightly in Shelby Township and beyond. Together, we are building a community rooted in love and service. Here’s to the next Step Out and Serve Weekend and many more opportunities to make a difference!
