When Faith Is Tested, God Is Still at Work

Life has a way of testing our faith when we least expect it. A difficult diagnosis. A season of uncertainty. A moment when the future feels out of control. In those times, it’s easy to wonder where God is—or if He’s still working at all. The opening chapters of Exodus remind us of a powerful truth: even when circumstances feel overwhelming, God is already moving, often in quiet and unexpected ways.

At Shepherd’s Gate, we are studying the book of Exodus together, chapter by chapter, discovering how God faithfully delivers His people—and how that same faithfulness still applies to our lives today.

A Story of Faith Under Pressure

Exodus opens during one of the darkest moments in Israel’s history. God’s people are living as slaves in Egypt. A new Pharaoh, driven by fear, orders the death of every Hebrew baby boy (Exodus 1:22). It’s a heartbreaking reality—one that tests faith at every level.

Yet even here, God is not absent.

In Exodus 2, we meet a Levite couple who give birth to a son. His mother sees that he is “a fine child” and does everything she can to protect him. For three months, she hides him—no small task in a time when discovery could cost her life.

When she can hide him no longer, she places him in a carefully crafted basket and sets it among the reeds of the Nile River (Exodus 2:3). It looks like surrender—but it’s actually an act of faith.

This child, Moses, is placed directly into the hands of God.

God’s Rescue Through Water

The basket Moses is placed in is no ordinary detail. The Hebrew word used here is the same word used for Noah’s ark in Genesis. Scripture is intentionally drawing a connection: once again, God saves through water.

Pharaoh’s daughter discovers the basket, hears the baby cry, and is moved with compassion. Though she knows the child is Hebrew, she chooses to protect him rather than destroy him (Exodus 2:6).

In a remarkable turn of events, Moses’ own mother is invited to nurse him—and is even paid to do so. What began as fear turns into blessing. What seemed like loss becomes provision.

This pattern runs throughout Scripture. God rescues through water:
Noah is saved through the flood (Genesis 7–8).
• Israel is delivered through the Red Sea (Exodus 14).
• God brings new life through baptism (1 Peter 3:20–21).

God’s plan is always bigger than what we can see in the moment.

God Works Through Ordinary People

One of the most encouraging truths in this story is how God accomplishes His work. He doesn’t rely on kings or armies. Instead, He works through everyday people:
A faithful mother
• A watchful sister
• Courageous midwives
• A compassionate princess

None of them knew the full story. None of them realized they were part of God’s rescue plan for an entire nation. They simply responded with faith in the moment they were given.

The same is true today. God often works through small, faithful steps—quiet obedience, simple courage, everyday compassion.

Have you ever wondered if your faithfulness really matters? Scripture reminds us that God uses ordinary people in extraordinary ways.

The Courage and Faith of Women

God Working Through Courageous Women

Throughout Exodus 1–2, God works powerfully through women. Moses’ story would not exist without their courage.

The Hebrew midwives refuse to follow Pharaoh’s command to kill the baby boys (Exodus 1:17).

Moses’ mother risks everything to protect her son.

His sister watches faithfully from a distance.

Pharaoh’s daughter listens to her compassion rather than fear.

In a time when women had little power or influence, God used their faith to change history. Their actions reflect a deep truth: God sees, values, and works through faithful hearts—often in ways the world overlooks.

Faith That Applies to Everyday Life

It’s easy to read stories like this and think they belong in the past. But the message of Exodus is deeply relevant today.

Many of us are carrying heavy questions:
How do I stay faithful when life feels uncertain?
• What do I do when I feel powerless?
• Does God still work in the middle of everyday stress?
• Exodus answers with a resounding yes.

God is still working:
• In families raising children
• In singles navigating transitions
• In adults balancing work, relationships, and responsibilities
• In anyone wondering if their faith can withstand real-life challenges

As Romans 8:28 reminds us, “In all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”

Not some things. All things.

Saved Through Baptism

The story of Moses ultimately points us forward—to Jesus and the gift of baptism.

The New Testament repeatedly connects God’s saving work in Exodus to baptism:
Peter explains that God saves through water (1 Peter 3:21).

Paul reminds believers that Israel passed through the sea as a sign of God’s deliverance (1 Corinthians 10:1–2).

At Shepherd’s Gate Church, baptism is celebrated as God’s work—not ours. It is a gift of grace where God promises forgiveness, new life, and belonging in His family.

Whether someone is baptized as an infant, child, or adult, baptism is about what God does for us through Jesus Christ.
