What does real freedom actually look like? Most of us wouldn’t say we’re “enslaved”—but stress, fear, busyness, and pressure have a way of subtly taking control. We carry things we were never meant to carry. We push through days that feel overwhelming. And sometimes, we wonder if life is supposed to feel this heavy. That’s why the story of Exodus still matters.
Over the past several months at Shepherd’s Gate Church in Macomb, MI, we walked through Exodus Part 1, a powerful section of the Bible that shows how God leads His people from slavery into freedom. And while the setting is ancient Egypt, the message is incredibly relevant today. This isn’t just history, it’s a blueprint for faith, spiritual growth, and everyday life.
God Sees You—Even When You Feel Overlooked
The story begins in a place of pain. The Israelites were enslaved in Egypt, forced into hard labor, and crying out for relief. For generations, it probably felt like nothing would ever change. But then came a powerful reminder, God wasn’t distant or unaware. He was already at work.“God heard their groaning and He remembered His covenant…” (Exodus 2:24)
The same is true for us. Whether you’re navigating a stressful job, raising kids in a busy season, or figuring out your next step in life, it can feel like no one sees the weight you’re carrying. But God does, He sees your effort. He hears your prayers and He hasn’t forgotten you.
Takeaway: Even when life feels stuck, God is still moving.
God Calls Ordinary People to Do Meaningful Things
Moses was not a polished leader. Not someone with it all together. In fact, when God calls him, Moses immediately starts listing reasons why he’s not the right person:
- “Who am I?” (Exodus 3:11)
- “What if they don’t believe me?” (Exodus 4:1)
- “I’m not good with words.” (Exodus 4:10)
Sound familiar? So often, we disqualify ourselves before God ever does. But God’s response to Moses is simple and powerful, “I will be with you.” (Exodus 3:12) That’s the difference-maker.
You don’t need to have everything figured out to take a step of faith. Whether it’s leading your family well, stepping into a new opportunity, or simply choosing to trust God more this week—He doesn’t expect perfection, He promises presence.
Takeaway: God doesn’t call the qualified, —He qualifies those He calls.
Freedom Doesn’t Happen Instantly
When Moses confronts Pharaoh, things don’t immediately get better. In fact, they get worse. Their workload increases. Pressure intensifies. The people begin to question everything.
If you’ve ever taken a step toward something better—only to feel like life got harder—you’re not alone. Freedom is often a process. God begins to send plagues, not just as acts of power, but as a way to show that He is greater than anything the Egyptians trusted in. Step by step, He is breaking chains that have held His people for generations.
It all takes time, and in our lives, it often does too. Breaking patterns, letting go of fear, building stronger faith. It rarely happens overnight. But progress is still progress.
“I am the Lord, and I will bring you out…” (Exodus 6:6)
Takeaway: Don’t give up just because it’s taking longer than expected.
God Is Stronger Than What You’re Facing
The plagues in Exodus can feel intense—but they reveal something important: God is in control.
Each plague directly challenged something Egypt relied on: its economy, its gods, its sense of security. One by one, those things proved powerless compared to God. This is a reminder we still need today.
We all put trust in something:
- Stability
- Finances
- Success
- Control
All of these things are material and can shift quickly. God doesn’t.
“So that you may know that there is no one like the Lord our God.” (Exodus 8:10)
Whatever you’re facing right now, uncertainty, stress, decisions about the future, you’re not dealing with it alone. God is bigger than your situation.
Takeaway: When life feels out of control, remember who is in control.
Freedom Comes Through Sacrifice
The story builds to a defining moment: the Passover. God instructs His people to mark their doorposts with the blood of a lamb. That night, judgment passes over those who are covered. This moment isn’t just about rescue, it’s about how rescue happens.
“When I see the blood, I will pass over you.” (Exodus 12:13)
Rescue happens through sacrifice, which is where the story clearly points forward to Jesus. Just as the lamb’s blood brought protection and freedom, Jesus becomes the ultimate sacrifice—offering forgiveness, grace, and a new beginning.
“Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.” (1 Corinthians 5:7)
Freedom isn’t something we earn. It’s something God provides.
Takeaway: Real freedom comes from what God has already done for you.
You Were Meant to Move Forward
After generations of waiting, it finally happens: The people leave Egypt. No longer enslaved!
“The Israelites went out… boldly.” (Exodus 14:8)
This is the moment they had been hoping for, but it’s also the beginning of a new journey. Freedom isn’t just about leaving something behind. It’s about stepping into something new. The same is true for us. Faith isn’t just about what we’re freed from—it’s about how we now live:
Choosing trust over fear
- Living with purpose
- Building stronger relationships
- Making space for God in everyday life
Whether you’re single, raising a family, or somewhere in between—God is leading you forward.
Takeaway: Don’t just celebrate freedom, step into it.
What This Means for Your Everyday Life
So how can Exodus shape your week ahead? Here are a few simple ways to live this out:
- Start your day with trust
Before the stress kicks in, take a moment to pause, pray, and remember: God is with you. - Take one step of faith
It doesn’t have to be big. A conversation. A prayer. A decision. Just one step where you surrender something you can’t control, knowing you have a God who is greater and goes before you. - Let go of what you can’t control
You don’t have to carry everything. God is already at work. Once you’ve taken a step of faith, double down on it. Remember you are not alone and continue to place your faith in the Lord. - Stay consistent, even when it’s slow
Growth takes time, but it’s worth it. Look at a longstanding challenge you’ve faced. How can you chip away at that challenge or break a big goal into manageable actions this week? Can you rely on faith in the Lord to keep moving forward? Can you pray about it when you feel progress is slow? - Remember what Jesus has done
You’re not earning your way to freedom, God already provider a redeemer for us. But we can remind ourselves every day, through prayer and petition, that if we’re pursuing the Lord’s will for us, trying to walk in lockstep with His plans for us, that they will be good plans.
